Wanda SG Aiya, it may be true, but don't be so bad lah.... BTW on English: Is it With regard to or With regards to? I think it's the former, but others are confusing me.
Fatum SG http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/learnitv35.shtml .... bah ! .. grammar .... whatever ...
the Bear SG try "Regarding the incident..." to do away with the "With" or whatever... always have a way out... just some manipulation of words and sentence structure... oh.. somewhere along the line, "Standing Signs" became... "standees" i don't even know where they get these... i have been using sentences like "the monitor of the computer.." and i get corrected (!!!!) it became "the computer's monitor.." i asked.. since when did the computer become sentient.. and they stared at me blankly... the organisation's Director.. or the Director of the organisation? tell me why the former is incorrect and the latter should be used?
Wanda SG Ahh...okie....thanks. It says: "With regard to", or "As regards...... " Such grammar is impt leh....coz always have to use it at work.
the Bear SG but neither the organisation nor the computer is human... even with animals, they cannot use that.. it is the death of proper former english strangely, i think the no.1 here learnt his the old school way.. he made a remark like that which whizzed over the heads of everyone else.. at least my stuff when i send in my papers are correct to the best of my ability... although my boss will change it and it becomes wrong
hisoka SG why is the organisation's director wrong? tot organisation made up of a collective of pple? and jsut like we say pple's choice or pple's person
the Bear SG an "organisation" is not human.. it is not even a living thing... as such it has to be treated as an object.. to use 's, the subject has to be human so, it will have to be "the director of the organisation" in fact, i would say that when the person is dead, you will have to use "the state of decomposition of the corpse" rather than "the corpse's state of decomposition "... as for "people's rights".. people are human right?
hisoka SG ic pretty long winded way of saying the same thign though. wonder if they should change it i assume 's can be used on living things or is it living humans only? so our news reporters are mangling english too, complain!! an organization is a collection of people also? argh!!!!! english!!!!!
the Bear SG humans... and no.. it is not a long winded way of saying things because it is saying it right.. our reporters have been mangling english as long as i can remember..
hisoka SG saying it right can be long-winded, if a shorter way can be found. whats not right today may be made right tomorrow.
the Bear SG i have been trying to write an email since i came in this morning.. each time i look at it, i get angry all over again... trying so hard to write it so that i will not say something vulgar, rude and something everyone will regret...
av98m SG Well, there is increasingly truncation in the language people use to communicate, no thanks to irc, icq, sms and what have you. Acronyms, shortforms, emoticons are taking over.
the Bear SG i write differently when i'm writing formal documents... however, a lot of people do not... and come up with weird and non-existent words among other things
